Oil Sands are deposits of bitumen, a heavy black oil that is converted into an upgraded crude before being used by refineries to produce gasolin and diesel fuels. Alberta' oil sands deposits are the largest in the world containing over 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen, of which 177 billion barrels are considered recoverable using current technologies.

Bitumen is extracted from the greater Fort McMurray region and sent to be processed in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, a 532 sq. km. area surrounding the provincial capital, Edmonton, and including Strathcona County, the town of Fort Saskatchewan, Sturgeon County and Lamont County (town of Lamont).
